Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis)

Vamana is a therapeutic emesis procedure in Ayurveda aimed at expelling excess Kapha dosha from the body. It is particularly beneficial for conditions like asthma, chronic allergies, obesity, and skin disorders .
Procedure:
Purvakarma (Preparatory Phase):
Internal Oleation (Snehana): The patient consumes medicated ghee for 3-7 days to loosen toxins.
External Oleation and Fomentation (Svedana): Oil massages and steam therapy are administered to further loosen toxins and direct them towards the gastrointestinal tract.
Pradhanakarma (Main Procedure):
On the day of Vamana, the patient is given Kapha-stimulating foods like black gram and sesame.
Emesis is induced using herbal decoctions, primarily made from Madanaphala (Randia dumetorum).
The patient vomits multiple times, typically 6-8 bouts, to expel the accumulated toxins .
Paschatkarma (Post-Procedure Care):
A specific diet regimen called Samsarjana Krama is followed to gradually return the digestive system to normal.
The patient is advised to rest and avoid physical exertion, exposure to extreme temperatures, and emotional stress .

Precautions:
Not recommended for children, the elderly, pregnant women, or individuals with certain health conditions like tuberculosis or hepatitis .
